Northwest Multihull Sailing Charters operates out of Bellingham, WA. Bellingham is just 20 miles south of the Canadian border. It is a small town of about 80,000 people. The harbor is on Bellingham Bay, and immediately to the southwest - the San Juan Islands. Just northwest of the San Juan's are the Canadian Gulf Islands, and just southwest - Victoria, B.C. This whole area is a cruising boater's paradise. Secluded anchorages, relatively calm waters, good summer weather, abundant wildlife, and numerous good marinas attract boaters here from all over the world.
Orca whales are so commonly seen that "the regulars" around here can identify most of them by sight or sound. And they all have names. We consider them a part of our community. Besides the Orcas, gray whales are often seen in these waters, along with porpoises, harbor seals, dolphin, bald eagles, herons, and many more.
The San Juan's boast an average of 247 days of sunshine per year, much more than Seattle because the San Juan's are nestled in the rain shadow formed by the Olympic Mountains and Vancouver Island. And around the islands, the water is mostly calm. You do have to watch the tides and currents though.
